This project was awarded Emerging Artist Grant in 2016 from Kildare County Council.
I left Poland straight after graduating from Arts College, along with the great influx of Polish people, I came here looking for the opportunity of a different life.
Coming to Ireland begun my adulthood. I very quickly realised that I completely under-estimated the cultural aspect of leaving my own country, language, and heritage.
I made 144 ceramic houses reflecting the housing estate I live in. I asked the neighbours who I became familiar with over the years, to glaze the ones that they inhabit. Together they created a visual map of my connections to the place through the relationship with people around me.
I also asked them what life circumstances brought them there, what they thought about the place, how long they were planning on staying at the estate. I recorded those interviews getting a deeper insight into people's stories.
I find the design of new estates amusing visually. The estate contains 144 identical houses. The repetitiveness that the I experience every day became a reason for multiplication in my work. I designed a set of wallpapers with the front of the house as the main motif. Each of them breaks the pattern in some way fighting this visual boredom. The length of the wallpapers is the same as the height of the walls inside the houses
